Provenance
Hartig Brewery was in Watertown, Wisconsin 1884-1920 and 1933-1947. I always enjoyed the factory lithos because of their importance in brewery history and they were one of Herb’s favorites. This litho has special place in my mind because of its’ history. It was badly burned in a fire– and an antique dealer had obtained it. Herb discovered it hidden in the shop and rescued it. He always wanted to have rare breweriana restored. A small part of it had to be removed. Herb found a NABA member who was learning the art of restoration and he asked him to practice on this sign. He told him it wasn’t an urgent project. A few years later it was returned to a very appreciative Herb. We haven’t heard of another one– I hope some collector has a perfect one.
