Provenance: David G. Yuengling Jr. was the eldest son of David G. Yuengling, the founder of D. G. Yuengling & Son, which is today the oldest brewery in the United States. Despite his father’s great success in Pottsville, PA, D. G. Yuengling Jr. sought individual success and founded his first brewery, the James River Steam Brewery, in Richmond, VA, in 1866. D. G. Yuengling Jr. was highly successful in Richmond until the Panic of 1873, which ultimately caused the brewery to close. D. G. Yuengling Jr. then focused all his attention on Yuengling & Co. Champagne Ale Brewery in New York, NY, which he had founded in 1871. In 1880, he changed the company name to D. G. Yuengling Jr., and it remained that until it was sold in 1882. This lithograph, printed on paper, features King Gambrinus, a very popular figure in breweriana, as he is the mythical inventor of beer.
