Object type:artifact
- Provenance
- In 1907, William “Stoney” Jones opened Eureka Brewing Company in Smithton, PA, after allegedly winning the brewery in a poker game. Stoney continued production at the brewery throughout Prohibition, producing ice, soft drinks, and near beer, as well as secretly brewing beer. When Prohibition ended in 1933, Stoney changed the brewery name to Jones Brewing Company, which remained owned by the Jones family until 1986. The Jones Brewing Company’s rights were passed around multiple times until 2017, when they were bought by Jon King, the great-grandson of William “Stoney” Jones, thus returning Jones Brewing Company to the Jones family. This oil on canvas portrait of Stoney Jones was painted in 1934 by Gustav Fisher. In the same year, the Jones family welcomed their most famous family member with the birth of Stoney’s granddaughter, Shirley Jones, who would later become an Academy Award-winning actress and star of the hit TV show The Partridge Family. In this portrait, a barrel of Stoney’s Gold Crown Beer is visible, which was one of the most popular beers in western Pennsylvania, particularly in the Monongahela Valley, following Prohibition. This is a one-of-a-kind portrait that was made to be displayed in the executive's office at Jones Brewing Company.
